Anti-Domestic Violence Law & Women's Organizations in China

Post  Guest on Wed Nov 09, 2011 1:30 am

Hello all,

First, good news. Here is evidence that the National People's Congress has included drafting a Domestic Violence Law as part of its agenda. In one year, from 2010 to March 2011, out of every 100 divorce cases seen by a Beijing Municipal Court, 28 wives claim to have been abused and only 1 case has received court support.

Zhang Lu's Thesis Paper

Post  Guest on Wed Nov 09, 2011 1:43 am

Also, you guys might want to check out this thesis written by Zhang Lu in 2007 for her doctorate degree at Ohio State. The paper is over 200 pages long and highlights everything from this history of feminism in China (originally scorned as it was associated with the imperialist West) to the 1992 Law on the Protection of Women's Rights and Interests to the Beijing Platform for Action in 1995 as well asi interest groups, NGOs and the international context of Women's Rights in China. She does a great job covering everything we are researching and trying to discover for Pfh. One important event that highlights a positive turn for China would be the 1995 Beijing Conference where China hosted the UN Fourth World Conference on Women. Here the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action were passed and goals of raising global awareness concerning VAW in China were achieved.

She talks about wife-beating and how the recognition of the term serves as proof that domestic violence exists in China. Her sources would also be useful to us!

IT's great that some research always lead to the organizations that we have contacted, which means we are in the right direction.

"Women watch China" is an organization founded in 2005 affiliated with Zhongze or Qianqian Law firm, which itself usded to named Women law research and service center of Peking University. They still have the name as the title of their website. http://www.woman-legalaid.org.cn/about.asp They were founded in 1995 and were removed from Peking Uni. in 2010, the reason of which pls refer to http://special.globaltimes.cn/2010-05/531143.html

"Anti-Domestic Violence Network of China Law Society" Stop Domestic Violence - 反对家庭暴力网 and The DVN; Domestic Violence Network of Beijing - 中国反对家庭暴力网络
The above two are both Fanbao 帆葆, as the copyright of the website shows it's China Law Society Anti-Domestic Violence Network. http://www.stopdv-china.org/cn/index.asp
It's something mistery to me that they have various websits, but the contents are pretty much the same. I believe I had visited another one. Couldn't find now.

I also checked the project by Fanbao in 2003: http://www.stopdv-china.org/cn/article.asp?id=2946 that they received some funds from U.S to launch a project with three hospitals. They translated Englsih materials to educate the people working at hospitals with the support of Fengtai District government.

Hello Team!

Tiff, glad that yo arrived home in one piece!

Also glad to see the the DV team is active! I was reading the 2009 report on the needs of victims of domestic violence. I see a lot of things that we have already covered so like Lingbing said, we are in the right direction. But there is also some good information that I will share with you soon.

Concerning the names of some organizations, it it indeed difficult to understand. But the article that you sent' Lingbing, about Zhongze being taken away form Beida, helped me understand why they had to change their name. It also tells us that we have to be careful in our approach for our project. In China, there is always a risk of being shut down at any point, even if we're doing something great for the society. So it reminds us to always be careful about what we do, say or write (including on the SW)and not take too much place. But we can still do something Smile.
